Floyd Mayweather has been stripped of the
WBO welterweight title he won after beating
Manny Pacquiao.
‘Money’ Mayweather beat Pacquiao on
points in an incredible showdown in Las
Vegas on May 2, winning the welterweight
belt in the process.
But he’s now been stripped of the belt for
an absolutely crazy reason.
It’s claimed that he failed to pay the
£128,000 sanctioning fee before the
deadline yesterday, and has now lost the
belt on the grounds of ‘lack of compliance’.
The fee was less than 0.1% of the millions
Mayweather earned from the fight, which
was most hyped in boxing history.
Yet he didn’t get the cash together in time
– and has now lost the belt.
Mayweather has been given 14 days to
appeal the decision, but the Daily Mail says
it is unlikely to be reversed.
The title will go to Timothy Bradley JR after
his controversial victory over Jessie Vargas
for the interim title last month.
Mayweather remains the WBA and WBC
champion.
