Point to prove, Rafa Benitez leaves Italy a loser

COMMENT: Sunday's dramatic 4-2 loss to Lazio
saw the Partenopei miss out on Champions
League football, but in truth they scarcely deserved
it

He is still loved in Liverpool and his achievements
at Chelsea are begrudgingly praised by most of a
blue persuasion. Add in his extraordinary
successes with Valencia and Rafael Benitez should
appear to be a reasonable candidate for the Real
Madrid role he is about to take up.
But on Sunday he prepared for his introduction at
the Santiago Bernabeu with a second Serie A
failure. With Inter in 2010-11 he collected two
trophies but tore the life out of the Nerazzurri’s
treble-winning side. And now he has ended his
two-year reign at Napoli with a fifth-place finish
when Champions League football should have been
a near-certainty.
On another night, he might have got away with it.
Needing a victory against Lazio to overtake Stefano
Pioli’s side and finish in the prized third place, his
team came from 2-0 down to draw level and then
found themselves awarded a 77th-minute penalty.
Gonzalo Higuain’s dreadful miss from 12 yards
was not Benitez’s fault per se, but the striker had
bailed out his boss in the first place with the two
goals that had pulled the Partenopei out of a hole.
Ogenyi Onazi and Miroslav Klose’s late strikes
rubbed salt in the wounds and returned the one-
sided look to the scoreline which for large parts
the match deserved.
The 4-2 loss typified Benitez’s coaching record of
recent years. There was no convincing structure
about his side, then he appeared to be heading for
an unlikely success after hurriedly throwing Plan B
into action, but ultimately he and his side just
weren’t good enough.
Only when Lazio were reduced to 10 men did
Napoli not look likely to concede at almost any
moment, and once Faouzi Ghoulam had followed
Marco Parolo into the dressing rooms the naive
defending that has been on display all season was
once again apparent.
Lazio have deserved Champions League
football
more than Napoli have, and Benitez rightly finishes
short of the mark as he leaves the peninsula. He
won a Coppa Italia and a Supercoppa Italiana but
ultimately failed to achieve what he was employed
to do.
Poor fortune saw his side leave the Champions
League at the group stage despite racking up 12
points in 2013-14, but the play-off exit against
Athletic Bilbao this time around and an inability to
send the Azzurri back to the competition next
season mean he will rightly be considered a failure
in Italy.
Napoli are not Real Madrid. They do not have the
Spaniards’ resources, they don’t have their
players, and they don’t have their winning
mentality. Higuain’s penalty miss – his fourth of
the season – also helped to underline the kind of
big-game bottle which saw him discarded by
Madrid two years ago.
But Benitez needs to show that he can be a better
decision-maker when the chips are down. He has
done little to improve Napoli’s abysmal defence,
and has continued to play Christian Maggio – an
excellent wing-back and accomplished right
midfielder – as a right-back even when constantly
showing himself to be short of the defensive nous.
He has also backed poor goalkeepers to buck long
downward trends, while the structure of his team
has been lacking even against some of the
country’s minnows.
While opposite number Stefano Pioli deserves
every bit of credit coming his way for the job he
has done at Lazio, Benitez has taken Napoli
backwards since taking the reins at San Paolo.
And now he is off to Real Madrid by way of
reward.
He heads to the Santiago Bernabeu with more to
prove than ever before.

Nani revels in Sporting comeback

The new Taca champions were 2-0 down to Braga
and played most of the match with 10 men, but
two late goals took the game to a penalty shootout
which they won
Nani expressed his joy at Sporting lifting the Taca
de Portugal in dramatic style by beating Braga
despite playing most of the match a man down
and having been 2-0 down until the 84th minute.
Eder put Braga ahead after 16 minutes from the
penalty spot, with the preceding foul seeing Cedric
sent off, before Rafa Silva doubled the lead shortly
afterwards to make it seem a certainty that Sergio
Conceicao's men would lift the club's first Taca
since 1966.
However, Algeria forward Islam Slimani pulled a
goal back with six minutes left on the clock and
Fredy Montero levelled in the third minute of
stoppage-time to give Sporting a fighting chance
at their first piece of silverware since 2008.
Braga were also reduced to 10 men when Mauro
was sent off in extra-time but no further goals
were scored, leaving Sporting to wrap up the
topsy-turvy triumph with a 3-1 penalty shootout
win.
Nani, playing his final match for the club before the
end of his loan from Manchester United, stressed
the comeback was no fluke as the players strived
throughout the 120 minutes to claim the positive
result.
“Winning like this makes victory taste so much
sweeter,” he told RTP. “It is a unique feeling. It
was a great game to watch, we were a man down
from practically the start… No one believed we
could do it.
“But we are united and always believed that we
could get back into the game to get a result.
Football is like this – in two minutes the game can
turn.
“Therefore you can't lower your head. You fight
until the final minute.”
Contrastingly, Braga boss Conceicao conceded the
way they were beaten in the final left a “bitter
taste” especially as he does not think Sporting
earned their 16th Taca de Portugal at all.
“It is sad to lose the way we did,” he said. “Two
errors resulted in the two goals we conceded, but
we were superior for the rest of the match.
“We could have gotten a third goal and that would
have given us such peace of mind. Alas, this
defeat leaves a bitter taste in our mouths. The
players were tireless in their efforts.”
Braga had only won the competition once in their
history (1965-66), with their only other major
trophy being lifted two years ago when they
triumphed in the Taca da Liga.
Sporting, on the other hand, now go level with
Porto with 16 victories in Portugal's main cup
competition, nine behind Benfica's record of 25
triumphs.

RECORD!!!! PSG FIRST FRENCH TEAM TO WIN FOUR TROPHIES IN ONE SEASON

Paris Saint-Germain have made history in
football after becoming the first French club to
win four trophies in a season. The French club
who have already won the Ligue 1 title, the
Coupe de la Ligue and the pre-season Trophee
des Champions, defeated Auxerre 1 – 0 on
Saturday, May 30, 2015 to lift the Coupe de
France cup in a historic quadruple season
Thanks to Uruguay striker, Edinson Cavani who
broke the deadlock in the 65th minute to help
his team win the tournament.

Police to investigate fir park brawl, Motherwell Rangers

Police Scotland say they will review the fight that
marred the conclusion of Motherwell's Premiership
play-off final victory over Rangers.
Rangers defender Bilel Mohsni was at the centre of
an ugly brawl on the final whistle at Fir
Park.
The Tunisian was pushed by Lee Erwin and
responded by aiming a kick and punch at the
Motherwell striker, before tussling with Fraser Kerr.
All three players were shown red cards by Craig
Thomson after the match.
Assistant chief constable Bernard Higgins said:
"Police Scotland will conduct a full review of the
circumstances and liaise with the appropriate
partners, and decide how best to take the matter
forward over the coming days."
Rangers manager Stuart McCall said he missed
the incident, but acknowledged such behaviour
was "unacceptable".
Speaking after his side's 3-0 loss at Fir Park, he
said: "If he has thrown a punch that's disgraceful.
"But it's safe to say he won't be at the club next
season. He's out of contract."
Motherwell boss Ian Baraclough said the scenes
detracted from a great day for the Lanarkshire
club, who triumphed 6-1 on aggregate to retain
their top-flight status.
"There's been an outpouring of emotions, shall we
say, and it's gone too far," he told BBC Scotland.
"Scottish football doesn't need it. There were two
teams battling it out over 180 minutes, they gave
it absolutely everything.
"For one or two individuals to ruin it, tarnish it, is
a shame."
Erwin appeared to shove Mohsni after the defender
refused his offer of a handshake and describe his
opponent's reaction as "embarrassing" in a
television interview, given with blood on his face.
Motherwell fans spilled on to the pitch while the
fight was going on and had to be ushered away by
police and stewards as they goaded Rangers
supporters.

Dani alves staying at Barca not going to PSG

The Parc des Princes coach is convinced the
Brazilian is "playing a game" with the Catalans,
though he feels Paul Pogba is an ideal potential
signing
Dani Alves will not be leaving Barcelona for Paris
Saint-Germain at the end of the season, according
to Laurent Blanc.
The right-back, 32, has been heavily linked with a
switch from Camp Nou to Parc des Princes all
season long due to his contract expiring on June
30.
Just last week Alves appeared to suggest he
would not be staying with the Catalans by saying
he had “both his feet and his head of out of the
club” due to “disrespect” from board members.
But PSG coach Blanc does not think the long-
mooted transfer of the Brazil international will
happen as he thinks the player is engaged in a
staring contest with his current club.
"Daniel Alves will not come to PSG," he told BeIN
Sports. "I do not think so anyway. He is out of
contract but his intention is to extend with Barca.
"It is a game he is playing with his club, he's
awaiting their proposal. It's nice for the press to
have something to talk about, but there has been
no contact that I know of."
The former France boss also discussed the club's
interest in Juventus' Paul Pogba, whom they are
believed to have had a bid accepted for, though he
is aware other clubs are desperately trying to lure
the midfielder from Turin.
"I am among those who think that Pogba is the
perfect recruit for PSG," Blanc continued. "He
interests us but we are not the only ones
interested and he will not be free.
"Many teams wants him, though maybe he will
stay at Juventus. He has many options right now,
it's good for him and his agent. And if Juve sell
him it would also be good for them financially."
Irrespective of whether Blanc can convince Pogba
or Alves to join France's first-ever domestic treble
winners this summer, the coach says the
upcoming transfer window will see plenty of fresh
blood brought in and plenty of familiar faces
leaving PSG.
"There will be arrivals and departures," he added.
"When you win, you must regenerate the squad.
"The president wants to do it - he is right and I
agree with him. We hope to regenerate in a
consistent manner.
"There will be an open door for departures, too.
We must be careful with the speed of how we
regenerate, especially with the Financial Fair Play
regulations, which can be quite heavy."
PSG's 1-0 triumph over Auxerre on Saturday
added the Coupe de France trophy to the Ligue 1
and Coupe de la Ligue titles they had already
secured in 2014-15.

Chelsea not playing Sydney FC for fun

The Blues boss insists he will deploy his best
attacking weapons at ANZ Stadium on Tuesday,
including Diego Costa and Eden Hazard
Jose Mourinho has promised to play a full-
strength Chelsea side against Sydney FC on
Tuesday, and feels they have a responsibility to
win for their huge legion of fans.
The Premier League champions kicked off their
post-season Asia tour with a 1-0 win over Thai
All-Stars on Saturday, courtesy of a goal from
young striker Dominic Solanke.
But Mourinho insists he will deploy his best
attacking talent at Sydney's ANZ Stadium, including
Diego Costa and Eden Hazard.
"When the opponent has the ball you have to park
the bus all the time, if you don't concede goals you
have more chances to win," the Chelsea boss told
reporters.
"I can give already to the coach Arnold [my team].
The front three I will play will be [Loic] Remy,
Diego Costa and [Eden] Hazard.
"If we park the bus with these three [in attack] I'm
sure we will be ok."
The Blues arrived to a huge reception at Sydney
Airport on Sunday, just hours after beating a Thai
All-Stars XI in Bangkok.
And Mourinho insists they will not lose focus
ahead of their showpiece fixture against a Sydney
FC outfit that were narrowly beaten by Tottenham
on Saturday.
"What I've seen the few times I've watched
matches in the Australian league, there's always a
good atmosphere, nice stadiums and people very
enthusiastic, the game very enthusiastic too," the
Portuguese added.
"We want a very good match. We feel always
responsibility. You cannot lose, you cannot just
play for fun, you have to go for a result.
"We are still celebrating [the league title], yes; we
are already thinking about next season, yes; but
Tuesday is our last game of the season as a club.
"We want to compete, we want to try and give a
good show.
"It's very important for us as a club, it's been a
very long time since Chelsea has been here and to
come just a week after we are champions is even a
bigger responsibility for us."
Asked what he knew of the A-League and Sydney
FC, Chelsea skipper John Terry continued: "We've
watched little bits, a couple of players have come
this way from the UK as well.
"We'll watch the game they played against Spurs
as well to get a better feel. We know the standard
will be very good and it will be tough in front of a
very hostile crowd as well, supporting both sides
we hope.
"We had Schwarzy [ex-Socceroos goalkeeper Mark
Schwarzer] there who told us about it every day.
"When you do see it and look at the stadiums and
the fans they are real passionate, very much like
the English supporters."

Marouane Fellaini denies comment

Marouane Fellaini has claimed he was misquoted
in saying that team-mate Angel di Maria could be
joining Paris St Germain this summer.
French television programme Telefoot had tweeted
a quote from Fellaini in which the United midfielder
said: "Angel di Maria would be a good signing for
PSG. He is a world class player."
But the Belgian hit back claiming that was not an
accurate reflection of what he had said.
"Seems I have been misquoted from @telefoot--
TF1 interview !!!! I said that Di Maria would be a
good signing for any club as he is a great player. I
also said if I were him I would STAY at @ManUtd".

Corinne Blatter defends her Father Sepp Blatter

Corinne Blatter insists the re-elected official is
"hard-working" and hit out at Michel Platini for
failing to run for the position himself
The daughter of Fifa president Sepp Blatter says he
is not the sort of person to take money.
Blatter was re-elected for a fifth term at the head of
football's governing body despite outspoken
opposition following the corruption scandal of the
past week.
The Swiss himself hit out at Uefa, and the US and
Britain, for an alleged 'hate campaign' against him
in the wake of the arrests of several Fifa officials in
Zurich.
And Corinne Blatter says her father - who has
never been personally connected to the corruption
investigation - insists he is hard-working and
honest in his role.
"He's not concerned [about potential arrest], not at
all," she told the BBC . "Nobody's without fault, but
he's not a person who is taking money. All the
money he earned, he earned it by working. He is a
hard-working president.
"All these people saying he takes money - I don't
know what kind of money he should take. His
character is not like that."
When asked if Blatter would be willing to talk to
law enforcement as part of their investigation, she
said: "I don't know, you have to ask him that."
She went on to criticise the timing of the
investigation and hit out at Michel Platini for
refusing to present himself as a viable candidate
for the Fifa presidency alongside Prince Ali bin al-
Hussein of Jordan.
"I don't think he has no credibility. All these things
happened to discredit him, that he would resign,
that he would say 'I'm not going to go for
president'," she said.
"But I can tell you, in about two or three weeks,
nobody's going to talk about those any more.
Other news is going to be top and he's going to
work normally.
"He's also the president of those who didn't vote
for him, and they have to find a way to work
together.
"You should ask those 73 voters why they voted
for Prince Ali. I don't think everyone wanted Prince
Ali to become president. I think some just wanted
to say 'hey, Mr President, please - you have to
change'.
"I don't think it's just words, I think he's going to
do something.
"I wouldn't say just from the Americans and the
British, but certainly people working behind the
scenes, yes [he believes are conspiring against
him].
"I don't know if you want to call them dark forces.
They really tried hard. Everything started last year.
They tried a lot.
"How can Uefa, who say they are the strongest
confederation, not put up a candidate? If he
[Platini] was serious about it, he should have
[stood for election]."

David luiz :PSG wants champions League

Laurent Blanc's side completed a domestic treble
on Saturday and the defender has now set his
sights on European glory
David Luiz was delighted to round out a "great
season" with Paris Saint-Germain by completing
an unprecedented domestic treble - and has now
set his sights on Champions League glory with the
French club.
Edinson Cavani grabbed the only goal of the game
as PSG defeated Auxerre 1-0 in the final of the
Coupe de France on Saturday, having already
won Ligue 1 and the Coupe de la Ligue.
It was also the perfect finish to Luiz's
debut campaign in France, the defender having
moved to Paris from Chelsea ahead of the 2014-15
season.
"It was a great season for us, we're very happy
here," he said. "It is never easy to win one title in a
season and we have won three.
"It is a pleasure to play for this club, thank you to
the club, the staff, the fans, every single person
who works at the club. It is a real family, human
club, so it is a pleasure to play here."
The Brazilian is now determined to help the big-
spending French side go on and be successful in
Europe.
PSG reached the quarter-final stage this year,
knocking out Chelsea in the process, before losing
5-1 on aggregate to Barcelona.
"Not bad, not bad, no? For my first season here,"
Luiz added. "This is a big club, you have to have
ambition to win every single competition. We have
raised our game now, so we need to keep it that
way. Of course, we also want to make the jump in
Europe.
"It's our dream to win the Champions League. This
season we lost to one of the best clubs in the
world, but we're on the right track.
"I am very happy here so for sure one day before I
leave this club, I would like to stay here for 10
years, I don't know how many years the president
will give me a contract, but I would like to win the
Champions League."

Di Maria would be a good signing for PSG, Fellaini

The Belgian insists his Manchester United team-
mate, who has been linked with a summer move to
the French champions, is a "world-class player"
Marouane Fellaini claims his Manchester United
team-mate Angel Di Maria would be "a good
signing" for Paris Saint-Germain.
Following his €75 million arrival from Real Madrid
last August, the Argentina international struggled in
his debut season at Old Trafford and has been
linked with a move to the French champions this
summer.
Fellaini believes Di Maria would be a big hit at
Parc des Princes but insists the Argentine would
be better served by turning down a summer move.
"Angel Di Maria would be a good signing for PSG,"
Fellaini told Telefoot . "He is a world-class player.
"He was successful at Real Madrid so he could be
successful anywhere. What would I do if I were
him? Stay at Manchester United."
Di Maria's campaign at United was disrupted by a
pelvic injury as well as an attempted break-in at
his Cheshire home in January.
The 27-year-old, who was forced to relocate to a
hotel after the failed burglary, scored just four
goals in 32 appearances last term and was unable
to force Ashley Young out of his place on United's
left flank.
When asked about Di Maria's future at the start of
May, Louis van Gaal insisted he wanted the winger
to stay but hinted that United could be open to a
deal for the Argentine.
"The manager and the club is always dependable
on the opinion of the player himself. The player
decides; we shall see what he decides," said the
Dutchman.
"He cannot say that he has had a marvellous
season here. The decision is not only to him
because now we have a contract so we shall speak
always with every player, evaluation, as I always
do. Then we speak with each other about the
future and that is with every player.
"I am pleased with his attitude, so that is not a
problem. I think Di Maria shall stay and he is
working very hard."

Unusualteam photo

As far as team photos go, Zenit St Petersburg's
will take some beating.
The Russian club, managed by former Chelsea and
Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas, won their
domestic league with two games to spare last
weekend.
And just how did the Villas-Boas and his players
celebrate? By dressing in traditional Russian
clothing, as you do.
A picture was posted by former Manchester City
player Javi Garcia on his Instagram account
featuring a sharp-looking Garcia and his equally
snappily-dressed team-mates, which includes
former Arsenal forward Andrey Arshavin,
surrounding Villas-Boas.
Zenit's title win, the fourth in their history, came in
Villas-Boas's first full season in charge.

Breaking news: Real Madrid vice president confirms Raga Benitez deal

The club official said he is looking forward to
which players arrive to work under "an exceptional
coach", saying the Spaniard will be one of the best
in the world
Real Madrid vice-president Eduardo Fernandez de
Blas has revealed the club's intention to appoint
Rafael Benitez as coach, hailing him as one of the
world's best.
Benitez is widely anticipated to succeed Carlo
Ancelotti at the Santiago Bernabeu, after the Italian
was sacked on Monday following a season in
which the club missed out on the league and
Champions League titles.
Fernandez de Blas is reported as telling a meeting
of a Madrid members' group: "Ancelotti is an
absolute phenomenon - a gentleman whom I have
great affection for, and I think everyone else at Real
Madrid does too.
"Until three days ago he was the best trainer in the
world, as two years ago it was Jose Mourinho, and
from this week onwards it will be Rafa Benitez.
"I'm excited and looking forward to July 30 to see
how the best players in the world work under an
exceptional coach."
The executive added that, despite his sacking,
Ancelotti's reputation has been boosted by his
time in the Spanish capital.
"Carlo now has more to his name than when he
came, but we're here to make decisions, which we
think are best for the club. We live and die by
them."
Former Valencia, Liverpool, Inter and Chelsea boss
Benitez announced his impending exit from Serie A
side Napoli on Thursday.
Sunday's clash with Lazio will mark his final game
as Napoli coach, with a place in next season's
Champions League on the line.

Klopp made us happy, watzke

It may have finished on a disappointing note for
the coach, but his efforts at the club have been
branded as "exceptional"
Jurgen Klopp gave Borussia Dortmund their smile
back in his seven years in charge, according to
sporting director Hans-Joachim Watzke.
In his seven years in charge at Signal Iduna Park,
Klopp won two Bundesliga titles, a DFB-Pokal
and two DFB Supercups as well as finishing
second in the Champions League.
However, his side only just scraped a place in the
Europa League for next season after a
disappointing campaign and lost 3-1 to Wolfsburg
in the DFB-Pokal final on Saturday - his final game
in charge.
Despite that, Watzke was full of praise for the 47-
year-old as he waved goodbye to the club.
"I've been trying for weeks to put off saying
goodbye," Watzke said. "But now the time has
come.
"What Klopp has done is exceptional and it has
never been so before. He came at a difficult time
and has returned the smile to us."
Klopp had his own goodbyes for the German side
after the final.
"It is not important what they think about you
when you come. It is important, what they think
about you when you go," he stated.
"No matter what happens, we will never forget our
time here."

iraolo condemns Neymar

The right-back and head coach Ernesto Valverde
were united in their condemnation of the Brazilian,
while both believe Lionel Messi was the decisive
factor
Barcelona star Neymar has been criticised by
Athletic Bilbao captain Andoni Iraola for his
showboating towards the end of the Copa del Rey
final.
The Catalans won the match 3-1 to complete the
second leg of a potential treble, yet the Brazil
striker was slammed by the opposition’s right-
back for lacking respect in his actions towards the
end of the match, something he failed to see the
logic in.
“I don't think it was at all classy and it isn't
sporting,” he said. “Neymar has examples in his
own side that he should look to because they have
a great deal to teach him.”
Head coach Ernesto Valverde concurred, stating:
“Sometimes he could avoid some of his conduct in
games that are already decided.”
The fixture is likely to be remembered for Lionel
Messi’s contribution as the Argentine scored twice
- including a memorable solo goal - to sandwich
an effort from Neymar, and Iraola believes the
influence of the 27-year-old was decisive.
“We were competitive but we needed to hit the
target and Messi turned the match on its head,” he
explained. “There is a reason he's the best player
in the world and he made the difference. The third
goal was vital and our reply came too late.”
Valverde, meanwhile, had warned that the
Argentine might prove impossible to resist prior to
the game and his fears were realised.
“Messi is the best player in the world and he has
shown it once again. We tried to stop him however
we could but it wasn't to be,” he admitted.
Athletic were chasing their first Copa crown since
1983-84, since which they have reached the final
four times only to lose to Barca on three
occasions.

PSG should sign lacazette instead of Di Maria leboeuf

The French champions need to start preparing for
life after Zlatan Ibrahimovic, while Marseille must
do their utmost to keep Marcelo Bielsa,
according
to the former player
World Cup winner Frank Leboeuf believes that
Paris Saint-Germain should focus their energy on
signing Alexandre Lacazette .
The French champions have been linked with a
number of high-profile stars this summer, including
Manchester United’s Angel Di Maria, yet the 1998
World Cup winner has advised them to instead
pursue the 24-year-old Olympique Lyonnais
forward. Lacazette finished as Ligue 1 top scorer
with a club record 27 goals and claimed the crown
for Zlatan Ibrahimovic, whose deal in Paris expires
in 12 months.
“I would take Lacazette ahead of Di Maria for PSG,”
Leboeuf told Telefoot . “They must start to prepare
for life after Ibrahimovic.”
Laurent Blanc’s side completed the domestic treble
on Saturday evening by defeating Auxerre 1-0 at
Stade de France, and despite the unconvincing
nature of that win, the former Chelsea star has
been impressed by what the Parisian outfit have
accomplished over the course of the last year.
“PSG have shown their supremacy this season.
Certain critics owe them a debt of apology,” he
added.
The 44-year-old also cast his eye to former club
Marseille, who he has urged to keep hold of head
coach Marcelo Bielsa, whose first campaign in
France has been wracked with frustration due to a
lack of influence over the club’s transfer policy.
“It’s important that Bielsa stays at Marseille. I’d
like to see what he could achieve with the squad
he wants.”

united in talks with Vidal

Manchester United will hold talks with Arturo
Vidal's agent Fernando Felicevich this coming week
as they look to secure the Chilean's signature
ahead of Premier League rivals Arsenal.

Bayern munich and Barcelona chase Gundogan

The midfielder will not renew his contract at
Borussia Dortmund and has been linked with a
move to Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Manchester
United
Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan has
confirmed that he is in talks with other clubs over
a transfer this summer, and has hinted that
Barcelona or Bayern Munich could be his
destination.
The Germany international, whose contract expires
in 2016, had been linked with a move to the
Premier League, were Manchester United and
Arsenal were among the suitors, but the 24-year-
old has hinted he is set to snub those approaches.
Asked if he is in the process of learning Catalan or
Bavarian, he replied: "We are holding talks yes, but
no decision has been made. I can't say more than
that on this."
He added that his future does not definitely lie
away from Dortmund.
"I'll leave it open as to whether they continue with
or without me.
“BVB are a great team and a really good coach is
coming.
“I don’t know how the team will look next season.
The challenge will be to get the great potential of
this team back on the pitch. We managed to do
that too little during the last year.
"In some ways we're glad this difficult season is
over now."
Dortmund spent the campaign off the pace in the
Bundesliga and only qualified for the Europa
League on the final day of the season. On
Saturday, they lost the DFP-Pokal final 3-1, ending
the reign of coach Jurgen Klopp on a disappointing
note in the process.

Azpilicueta books ref for Hazard sefie

The official asked for a photo with the PFA Player
of the Year after the Blues beat Thailand All-Stars
1-0 in Bangkok, with Dominic Solanke scoring the
only goal
Chelsea defender Cesar Azpilicueta showed his
sense of humour after the Blues’ 1-0 win over
Thailand All-Stars by giving the referee a yellow
card!
The official, clearly star-struck by the quality of
Jose Mourinho’s squad, asked Eden Hazard for a
post-match selfie, much to the joking disdain of
the Spanish full-back.
Azpilicueta made light of the incident by robbing
the referee of his yellow card and booking him.

Arsenal targeting premier League title

Arsenal forward Theo Walcott says the Gunners
have to challenge for next season's Premier
League title after they successfully retained the
FA Cup.
Walcott, 26, scored the first goal as Arsenal
comfortably defeated Aston Villa 4-0 in the final at
Wembley.
But the Gunners came third in the Premier League,
12 points behind champions Chelsea, and have not
won the league title since the 2003-04 season.
"The Premier League has to be the next target for
us," said Walcott.
"That's two FA Cup wins now but this is one of the
best squads we have had at Arsenal so we should
be achieving more. We need to start well in the
Premier League next year."
Walcott suffered a serious knee injury in January
2014 that saw him miss the 2014 FA Cup final,
where Arsenal beat Hull City 3-2 at Wembley.
The England international only played two games
in November before another injury kept him out for
a further two months.
But he finished the season strongly with a hat-
trick in Arsenal's last Premier League match, a 4-1
win against West Brom as Walcott was preferred to
Olivier Giroud up front.
Glory, glory Arsenal
Arsenal have now won the FA Cup 12 times,
more than any other team.
Walcott opened the scoring in the 40th minute at
Wembley before further goals from Alexis Sanchez,
Per Mertesacker and Giroud secured the victory.
"I missed all this last year and to be part of it this
year is a dream come true," added Walcott.
"My family are here and I have worked so hard, as
has everyone to do this. I want to thank the
manager for picking me and having faith in me and
hopefully I repaid him.
"I also want to thank the physios and everyone
who has looked after me. This is for them."
'My hunger is great. I want to do well'
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has now guided the
Gunners to two trophies in two seasons after eight
campaigns without winning any silverware.
"We have shown that we are a real team and can
deal with pressure," said Wenger. "I congratulate
the players, the staff and the fans. We are so
happy.
"I had a difficult week to pick the team. But when
confidence and sprit is so good it helps. I am very
proud. Our club is doing well and if I can
personally do well then it's even better.
"I have two more years of my contract and my
hunger is great."
Wenger has won the Premier League three times,
with their last success coming with the 2003-04
side that remained unbeaten throughout their
league season.
He added: "Of course I think we can push on. Why
not? We have won the league in the past when we
have had potential to do it and that's what we want
to do again.
"That's what we want to show next season but you
also don't know how good the other teams will be.
"It is about consistency at the top level and in the
past we have won leagues when we have been
consistent."
'We really wanted this one'
Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey is also adamant
that his side can win the Premier League title in
2015-16.
"It's a great feeling," said Ramsey. "We really
wanted this one. Winning back-to-back FA Cups is
not an easy thing to do and we have done it.
"Now we can look forward to next season and kick
on and give it a real go in the Premier League."
'If we keep this squad we have a good
chance'
Striker Olivier Giroud scored Arsenal's fourth goal
in injury-time after coming on as a substitute in
the 77th minute.
He feels it is vital that the key players remain at
the club.
"If we keep this squad, with one or two more
players, we will have a good chance to challenge
for the title," said Giroud. "The Premier League title
is the target. Hopefully we will be there."
Arsenal's win in numbers
12 - Arsenal moved one win ahead of
Manchester United to become the club with the
most FA Cup final victories.
6 - Arsene Wenger is the first post-war
manager to win the FA Cup six times.
4 - The Gunners have joined Wanderers,
Blackburn Rovers and Tottenham in retaining
the FA Cup on multiple occasions.
2 - Aston Villa mustered just two shots in the
entire game and both were blocked. Arsenal had
16 shots.
13 - This is only the 13th time that a team has
scored four or more goals in an FA Cup final.
2 - Alexis Sanchez is only the second Chilean
to score in the FA Cup final.
100 - Arsenal midfielder Santi Cazorla was the
only player in the final to have 100 touches.

Falcao in talks with Chelsea

Chelsea links with Radamel Falcao won't go away
and the latest claims have come from The Sun who
have stated that Jorge Mendes is in talks with the
Stamford Bridge club.
It comes just a few days after reports stated Falcao
would do anything to get a transfer to Chelsea and
a chance to play for the new Premier League
champions.
Falcao himself is currently with Colombia's Copa
America squad preparing for the tournament which
starts early next month.
Should he get chances to start for Colombia then
Falcao needs to show that Manchester United was
a blip and he's still the same player he was before
his serious knee injury.
Speaking to AS, Falcao said he's letting Mendes
deal with a transfer whilst he concentrates on the
football "Today I'm thinking about just the Copa, I
know of many things that have been talked about,
but I'm very calm, my agent is taking care of it."
Given his reputation, Mendes will be expected to
pull a good move out of the hat for Falcao this
summer.

Ryan Giggs win best goal of last 50 year

Ryan Giggs's individual effort in the 1999 FA Cup
semi-final against Arsenal has been voted by you
as the best Match of the Day goal of the last 50
years.
The Manchester United midfielder's winning strike
was chosen by BBC pundit Alan Shearer as the
goal of the 1990s and has now been chosen by
you as the best of the past five decades.
A BBC panel looked at every Match of the Day goal
of the season since it started back in 1970 and
chose five goals - one for each decade - for you to
vote on.
The vote opened during Football Focus on
Saturday and ran until full-time in the FA Cup final.
You will be able to vote on the BBC website.
Here are the goals chosen, listed in the order they
were voted in.
1: 1990s: Appetite, attitude and ability - 32%
Alan Shearer's goal of the 1990s: Ryan Giggs for
Manchester United against Arsenal in 1999.
With 11 minutes remaining in extra time of the
1999 FA Cup semi-final replay, Ryan Giggs took
on the entire Arsenal defence. He jinked past four
defenders and smashed the ball past a helpless
David Seaman to set up a final with Newcastle
United.
Shearer said: "The great players deliver at the vital
moments in the really big matches and this is one
of them. It stands out not just because of the
quality of the run, past four players, and Giggs's
outstanding finish, but because of what it meant in
that match and what it led to in Manchester
United's treble-winning season in 1998-99.
"This goal is not just a brilliant individual one, it
was massively important for that team. It won the
FA Cup semi-final replay in extra time against
United's main rivals at the time. Giggs's
celebration is also a memorable one and the whole
moment sums up his appetite, attitude and ability."
2: 2000s: An iconic Premier League moment
- 27%
Phil Neville's goal of the 2000s: Paolo Di Canio
for West Ham against Wimbledon in 2000.
Wimbledon lose the ball cheaply and Marc-Vivien
Foe recycles possession out to Trevor Sinclair on
the right wing. Sinclair has time to look up and
measure a deep cross to the back post. Driven
hard and flat, the ball arcs over the head of
Wimbledon centre-back Kenny Cunningham and
Paolo Di Canio attacks. The Italian meets the ball
on the full, both feet off the ground, connecting
with the outside of his right boot and blasting the
ball past Neil Sullivan and into the corner. Simple
really.
Neville said: "It's one of the best goals of all time.
It was a unique strike, the technique to hit the ball
across his body with both feet off the floor was
special. There have been great volleyers of the ball
like Mark Hughes or Marco van Basten but that
was a brilliant strike from a wonderful crossfield
ball.
"Di Canio had to watch the ball come 40 yards
through the air, time it right and then get a
sensational connection.
"The defenders and goalkeeper could do nothing
about that goal. I blame keepers for a lot of goals
but that was just a perfect goal. If it was scored
against me I would have been tempted to applaud
it.
"Didier Drogba scored against Everton with a
superb goal once, he took it on his chest and
smashed it in from 30 yards and I just had to
stand there and admire it. Sometimes you are on
the pitch for a moment like that and even if you
lose the game you think 'at least I can tell my
grandchildren that I played in that game'. That
must be how the Wimbledon and West Ham
players think about that Di Canio goal.
"It summed him up as a player. He was a man
who could produce moments of brilliance with
great individual technique. There are great goals
every season in the Premier League but the really
great goals are the ones which will be played for
years and years to come.
"That goal will be on the credits for Match of the
Day in 30 years' time. They do not come around
very often! It was a special goal, an iconic
moment."
3: 2010s: Spectacular acrobatics - 22%
Guy Mowbray's goal of the 2010s: Wayne Rooney
for Manchester United v Manchester City in 2011.
Wayne Rooney's spectacular late overhead kick in
2011 earned Manchester United a 2-1 win over
rivals Manchester City.
Mowbray said: "I love the 30-yard blasters. I stand
and applaud the 30-pass team efforts. The goals
that I can watch over and over again though, are
the ones that you very rarely see - the different
ones. That's why I've got to go for Wayne
Rooney's spectacular acrobatics that won the
Manchester derby in February 2011.
"It's not only the speed of thought and the
incredible technique that makes the goal extra
special - it's the timing of it, the context, the
importance, the lot. 1) Rooney's winner at Old
Trafford put Manchester United back on track for a
title they'd eventually win, one week after a shock
defeat at Wolves. 2) It was a key moment in the
player getting fully back onside with United fans,
after rumblings of wanting to leave earlier in the
season. 3) It secured a derby win that left City
struggling in the title race, and beaten in a game
they'd had much the better of.
"Above all though, it's just one of those once in a
career goals that only a few experience. Rooney
said immediately after the game that it was
"definitely the best goal" he'd scored. I'd be
amazed if he ever gets a better one. I'd be less
surprised if anyone was injured trying to copy it!"
4: 1970s: 'The crowd are invading the pitch'
- 10%
John Motson's goal of the 1970s: Ronnie Radford
for Hereford v Newcastle in 1972.
Ronnie Radford wrote his name into FA Cup
folklore. Non-league Hereford were the archetypal
underdogs as they took on the might of top-flight
Newcastle United in the third-round replay.
A tidy one-two with Brian Owen set up Radford to
unleash a 35-yard strike past Newcastle
goalkeeper Willie McFaul to take the tie into extra
time. Cue an excitable 26-year-old John Motson
on commentary: "Oh, what a goal! What a goal!
Radford the scorer... and the crowd are invading
the pitch." Ricky George's extra-time winner
ensured Hereford pulled off a famous win and
Newcastle went out.
Motson said: "It is an iconic goal and led to what
is probably the greatest all-time shock in the FA
Cup. It was my first commentary match for Match
of the Day as well. The match was meant to be a
formality, which is why I was given it, but it
changed into an unforgettable national occasion.
"Not only was it a great day for Hereford, it was
also a great day for me. That win against
Newcastle helped make my name as a
commentator and helped me get where I am today.
I feel like I owe a lot to Hereford for that giant
killing. I have dined out on them often over the
last 30 years. It was a strike from about 40 yards
in the mud."
5: 1980s: Sharp's derby drive - 8%
Mark Lawrenson's goal of the 1980s: Graeme
Sharp for Everton against Liverpool in 1984.
Everton, without a league title since 1970, were a
resurgent force under Howard Kendall. When
Graeme Sharp skipped away from Mark Lawrenson
and smashed a 30-yard drive beyond Bruce
Grobbelaar, Everton had a first win at Anfield in 14
years and sent a clear warning that they were
genuine title contenders. They went on to win the
First Division by 13 points from their city rivals.
Lawrenson said: "It came from a long ball forward
from Gary Stevens which came over my head. I
always swear that Graeme was offside but, even
though he had got the wrong side of me, I
remember thinking 'well if he goes to run with it I
will catch him easily' - in those days I was
supposedly quick.
"When he went to hit it, I thought 'that's alright,
Brucie will deal with that' but it was an absolute
wonder-strike. Sharpie was a great player, who
never got as much praise as he should have done,
but he never scored another goal like that either.
"It was a big goal in a big game because of how
much it propelled Everton forwards. Before then,
they had not won at Anfield since they won the
title in 1970. That goal gave them massive belief
that they could go on and win it again - which
they did. We already knew they were the new team
challenging us, but we realised then that they
meant business, and just how good they were."

Allegri warns Pogba to stop showboating ahead of barca clash

The midfielder has been criticised by his coach for
making silly mistakes following their 2-2 draw with
Hellas Verona on Saturday
Massimiliano Allegri has warned Paul Pogba he
must "stop showboating" to cut out mistakes
affecting his game ahead of Juventus ' Champions
League final clash with Barcelona.
The France midfielder was not at his best against
Hellas Verona on Saturday as the Bianconeri
finished their victorious Serie A season with a 2-2
draw, and Allegri has called for Pogba to simplify
his performances.
"Pogba has enormous qualities but, when he
lowers his concentration, he makes mistakes that
are avoidable," the Juve coach told Sky Sport .
"This is an important point of his growth, he needs
to stop showboating in midfield."
Juve were set to head into next Saturday's clash
with Barca in Berlin with a triumph, thanks to
goals from Roberto Pereyra and Fernando Llorente,
but Juanito added to Luca Toni's earlier effort in
stoppage-time to deny the Italian table-toppers all
three points.
"We alternated between good aspects of our game
and bad aspects," Allegri added. "Our lead was
handled badly, to be honest, regardless of the
missed penalty from Carlos Tevez late on. Winning
would've been a better way to end."
Allegri also passed his opinion on ominous qualityH
that Barca have in their ranks but stressed he is
not having any sleepless nights at the prospect of
facing Luis Enrique's men.
"It’s borderline impossible to stop Barcelona being
dangerous," the coach continued. "We have to not
only focus on that, but on attacking and making
life hard for them.
"Barcelona play in a different way with Luis Enrique
at the helm to how they did under Pep Guardiola.
They have less possession and play with a centre-
forward, which they didn’t use before.
"I'm not losing any sleep, I sleep pretty soundly.
It’s a game we have to prepare for but there’s no
need to fire up the team for a Champions League
final.
"Nobody expected Juventus to reach the final, and
this doesn’t happen often in one's life, so we must
do our best to bring the trophy home

No world cup changes, Blatter confirm

The 79-year-old says the 2018 and 2022 tournaments will not be expanded so that
more nations can compete
Fifa president Sepp Blatter has confirmed there will be no changes to the upcoming
World Cup tournaments in relation to qualification and allocation of regional places.
Speaking a day after he was re-elected for a fifth term at the helm of football's world
governing body, the 79-year-old insisted the sport's global showpiece would not be
altered.
Russia will stage the 2018 competition before Qatar hosts four years later, and Blatter
explained the allocation of 32 places at the finals will remain the same.
Europe will therefore retain 13 qualifying places, with Africa keeping five. South
America and Asia will each have four automatic qualifiers, with their fifth-placed
nations entering play-offs with countries from CONCACAF (three automatic qualifiers)
and Oceania, who remain without an automatic route to the World Cup. The host
nations will complete the respective line-ups.
"This morning we [the FIFA Executive Committee] had an excellent meeting," said
Blatter. "Among other things we decided that the slots of the 2018 and 2022 World
Cup would not change.
"So, we will stick to 32 teams and the same distribution [of places from across the
confederations] accepted by everybody, although some were more grumpy than
others.
"Furthermore, in relation to the 2026 World Cup, we decided that all associations in
Fifa can ask to host except those who are in the continent of the 2022 hosts – in
other words Asia.
"All the other confederations will be able to present bids."
Blatter won Friday's presidential election at the Fifa Congress in Zurich after winning
133 votes in the first ballot against Prince Ali bin Al Hussein.
Prince Ali withdrew before the second round of voting, having only received support
from 73 member nations.

Di Maria leaving Manchester united?

Manchester United winger Angel di Maria has reportedly told the club
that he wants to leave Old Trafford this summer.
The Argentine international made a bright start at United following his
£59.7million move from Real Madrid, but faltered badly as the season
went on, with injury and an attempted burglary on his home affecting his
performances.
Speculation over the 27-year-old’s future has been rife, and according to
beIN Sports, the 27-year-old has now decided to call an early end to his
United career.

United are under no obligation to sell, and although they are unlikely to

mancini vows to rebuild inter

The coach returned to the club for a second spell
in November but has overseen a disappointing
campaign
Roberto Mancini has vowed to continue the
rebuilding work at Inter next season and has no
intention of leaving the club
The former Manchester City manager returned to
San Siro in November after Walter Mazzarri had
been sacked, but failed to revive their fortunes
despite an encouraging start.
With one game remaining, Inter have a small
chance of earning a European place next season if
results and decisions - namely whether Genoa are
granted a Uefa license - go their way.
However, that has not stopped Mancini from being
criticised, though he insists he remains confident
of restoring the club to their former glories.
"I will stay at Inter, 100 per cent, it is safe," he
said. "The president, like all people who work for
the club, wants the best Inter.
"We will have to work, we will have a month of
very intense work, we will resume preparation
early.
"The 50 days of preparation will be fundamental.
"You cannot know what will happen [next season]
but what is certain is that we'll have a strong team
to fight for the top positions next year.
"We hope that they stay all good players. I believe
that all players can do much more than they have
already done."
Inter face Empoli in the final round of fixtures on
Sunday.

Ac Milan wants both Carlos Ancelloti and Zlatan Ibrahimovic

The club supremo says supporters have
encouraged him to persuade the sacked
Real
Madrid coach to take over at San Siro
AC Milan president Silvio Berlusconi says he is
determined to convince Carlo Ancelotti and Zlatan
Ibrahimovic to return to the club this summer.
The Rossoneri have been vocal in their desire to
bring former boss Ancelotti back to San Siro
following his sacking by Real Madrid.
And Berlusconi claims he has the backing of the
supporters as he attempts to appoint the three-
time Champions League winner in Filippo Inzaghi's
place.
"I hope Carletto comes back to us, we are willing
to invest in him. I hope there is a good chance
he'll be the next coach of Milan," he told Sport
Mediaset.
"Galliani and I are not the only ones who want him
to come back. All Milan fans I've spoken to want
him back."
Ancelotti himself says he intends to take a year
out of the game in order to have surgery on a
small issue in his back.
Berlusconi, however, hopes the operation will not
scupper his plans and admits he is not currently
contemplating any other candidate.
"He needs a small operation and he'll make a
decision afterwards, which also takes into account
his family," he said.
"I don't want to think of another possibility if it
isn't Ancelotti. If he doesn't come then we'll look
at other options."
Berlusconi also admitted he is determined to bring
Ibrahimovic back to the club from French
champions Paris Saint-Germain.
"I'm fixated on his return, although it's a very
difficult thing to make happen, and it will take
patience," he added.
"But he's magnificent on the pitch

Rio Ferdinand hangs his boots

The 36-year-old has called time on his 19-year
career, having won six Premier League titles and
the Champions League with Manchester United
Rio Ferdinand has announced his retirement from
professional football.
The 36-year-old has called time on his 19-year
career after being released by QPR earlier this
week.
Ferdinand won six Premier League titles, the
Champions League, the FA Cup and three League
Cup trophies in 12 seasons with Manchester
United. He was also capped 81 times by England.
“After 18 years as a professional footballer, I now
feel it's the right time for me to retire from the
game that I love," Ferdinand said in a statement to
BT Sport .
“As a 12-year-old boy, kicking around a football
on the Friary Estate in Peckham, I never dreamt
that I would play for my boyhood club West Ham,
captain Leeds United, win the Champions League
with Manchester United, or re-join my first
manager Harry Redknapp at Queens Park Rangers.
“I will always regard the 81 times that I played for
England, with immense pride. These are all
treasured memories that will last a lifetime.
“Starting a career, every young man needs
mentors. I found mine in Dave Goodwin, the
district manager at Blackheath, and Tony Carr, the
youth team manager at West Ham. They installed
in me personality traits that lasted throughout my
career. I will always be grateful to them.
“I'd like to thank Chris Ramsey, Harry Redknapp,
David O'Leary and David Moyes who managed me
at various times in my career, all the backroom
staff who looked after me over the years, and the
players that I played with. I would also like to
thank the team who managed me off the pitch,
Jamie Moralee and everybody at New Era.
“Winning trophies over my 13 years at Manchester
United allowed me to achieve everything that I
desired in football. From a young child to today,
that was all I cared about.
“None of that would have been possible, without
the genius of one man, Sir Alex Ferguson. His
greatest accomplishment in my eyes will always be
how he developed us as men, not just as
footballers. He will in my opinion, always be the
greatest manager in British football history.
“I'd also like to thank and pay tribute to my wife
Rebecca and my family, including my mother and
father, for their sacrifices, their encouragement and
their advice throughout my career.
“And finally, I'd like to thank all the fans from all
the clubs - for without them professional football
would not exist. I will miss each and every one of
you on my Saturday afternoons.”

Build up to cup final England and Scotland

The showpiece English FA Cup and Scottish Cup
finals on Saturday will see Arsenal face Aston Villa
at Wembley and Falkirk play Inverness Caledonian
Thistle at Hampden Park.
A global TV audience of half a billion people is
expected to watch the Gunners take on Villa.
Arsenal, seeking a record 12th FA Cup, face a club
who last won it in 1957.
In Scotland, top-flight Inverness CT and second-
tier Falkirk make for an unexpected final line-up.
Arsenal v Aston Villa (17:30 BST)
Arsenal are odds-on favourites to win the world's
longest-running cup competition, which brings the
English season to a conclusion.
The London side, managed by Arsene Wenger, won
last year's FA Cup to move level with Manchester
United with 11 wins in the competition.
They beat Villa 3-0 and 5-0 in the league this
season and finished 14 places above them, in
third. Villa narrowly avoided relegation, ending the
top-flight season one place above the drop zone.
Tim Sherwood's side have not reached this stage
since 2000, when they were beaten 1-0 by
Chelsea.
The BBC will be broadcasting the climax to the
prestigious tournament for the first time since
2008.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger:
"It's not easy to get to the FA Cup final and it's not
easy to finish in the top three in England.
"We have been remarkably consistent since
January and that's why I think we have a good
chance next season."
Aston Villa manager Tim Sherwood:
"I know what the boys are capable of in one-off
games. On big occasions, they've produced the
goods and we need to do it one more time.
"The boys performed on a huge stage as
underdogs against Liverpool [Villa recorded a 2-1
win in the semi-final], but we deserved to win that
game and we're hoping we can do the same."
TEAM NEWS
Arsenal striker Danny Welbeck will miss the final
after failing to recover from a knee injury.
Attacking midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, full-
back Mathieu Debuchy and captain Mikel Arteta are
in contention after returning to training following
recent injuries.
Aston Villa goalkeeper Shay Given could be set to
take his place in goal having recovered from a
groin injury.
Full-back Aly Cissokho, midfielder Kieran
Richardson and defender Jores Okore trained along
with Given on Friday, but centre-back Ciaran Clark
is out with a knee injury.
Arsenal v Aston Villa - FA Cup final facts
This will be Arsenal's 19th FA Cup final, a
record for any team. They already share the
record of 11 wins with Manchester United.
Saturday will be Arsenal's 40th appearance at
Wembley (old and new stadium combined),
again more than any other team.
Only George Ramsay (six with Aston Villa
between 1887 and 1920) has won the FA Cup
as a manager more times than Arsene Wenger.
Villa have played in the FA Cup final 10 times,
winning seven, making them the fourth-most
successful side in the competition (Tottenham
have won eight finals).
Inverness CT v Falkirk (15:00 BST)
There will be a surprise name on the Scottish Cup
as Premiership side Inverness Caledonian Thistle
take on Championship club Falkirk.
League champions and 36-time winners Celtic
were seen off by Caley Thistle following a dramatic
semi-final that finished 1-1 in normal time and
witnessed three more goals in extra-time, with
defender David Raven grabbing the winner.
Manager John Hughes's side will be looking to go
one better than in 2014, when they were beaten by
Aberdeen on penalties in the Scottish League Cup
final - their first major cup final. They have already
secured a spot in the Europa League after finishing
third in the Premiership.
Two-time winners Falkirk, meanwhile, came
through three rounds before Craig Sibbald's 75th-
minute effort saw off fellow Championship side
Hibernian.
The Bairns won the trophy in 1913 and 1957, but
they were in the final as recently as 2009 when
they were beaten 1-0 by Rangers.
TEAM NEWS
Falkirk's fit-again striker Rory Loy is in the squad,
but the Bairns' top scorer, who has not featured
since injuring an ankle against Queen of the South
in the quarter-final on 6 March, may start on the
bench. Mark Kerr and John Baird are both cup-
tied.
Inverness are without the suspended Gary Warren
after the defender was booked in the semi-final
win.
Long-term absentee Richie Foran remains on the
sidelines because of a knee injury.
Falkirk manager Peter Houston:
"I think we all agree that Inverness are
overwhelming favourites as they are third in the
Scottish Premiership and they are there for a
reason - they are a really good side.
"I have a fair idea what team John Hughes will
play and he might have a fair idea what we will
play as well.
"But it is down to the Saturday afternoon and who
handles it.
"In a one-off situation anything can happen and
because you are underdogs it doesn't mean you
can't win the match."
Inverness manager John Hughes:
"This year, getting that Europa League spot
through the league placing for the first time in the
club's history - that's your bread and butter. That
tells you how good a team you are throughout the
season.
"Then the Scottish Cup final. If we can go and win
it, it would be remarkable."

Tottenham complete Wimmer deal

Tottenham have completed the signing of defender
Kevin Wimmer from Cologne.
The 22-year-old centre-back has moved to White
Hart Lane for an undisclosed fee, believed to be in
the region of £4m.
Wimmer, an Austria international, has signed a
five-year contract with Mauricio Pochettino's side.
Having joined Cologne from LASK Linz in 2012, he
helped then win promotion to the Bundesliga and
made 72 appearances for the club.
He told their official website: "Tottenham is a huge
chance for me. Nonetheless, it won't be easy
saying goodbye to Cologne.
"I experienced wonderful moments here, such as
the promotion and the Klassenerhalt (staying up).
"I want to thank the training staff, my teammates,
and all those involved in the club for their
extraordinary support.
"Cologne and its fantastic fans will always remain
something special for me."
Cologne general manager Jorg Schmadtke added:
"Kevin has improved tremendously during his time
here and has developed into an Austrian
international player.
"Of course it is with some regret that he will be
leaving us, but we understand that he is getting
the opportunity to play for one of the biggest
traditional clubs in London.
"In our dealings with Tottenham we were able to
reach an agreement that all parties were happy
with."

Marcelo to miss Copa America

The Real Madrid full-back has been replaced after
the Selecao team doctor confirmed he is suffering
from a back injury
Real Madrid full-back Marcelo has been ruled out
of Brazil 's Copa America squad due to a back
injury, with Internacional's Geferson called up as
his replacement.
The Brazilian Football Confederation confirmed
Geferson's promotion on Friday with a statement
on their website, before Madrid confirmed
Marcelo's injury following a hospital visit.
"We were told by Real Madrid doctors that, in a
training session, he went to jump and since then
he's been suffering severe pain in the lumbar
region," Brazil team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar told
AS.
"We did some tests and he won't be able to start
to train with us on Monday. He'd need around
three weeks, more or less, to be able to train.
Today he has real problems, he can't walk.
There's no other solution."
Geferson, 21, will join Dunga's squad ahead of
Brazil's friendlies against Mexico and Honduras,
and he will make his senior international debut if
given game-time in any of the upcoming matches.
Brazil have been grouped with Colombia, Peru and
Venezuela for next month's Copa America in Chile.
Dunga's side will start their campaign against Peru
on June 14.

Blatter slams uefa's hatred campaign

The re-elected Fifa president says he will not
forget the fervent opposition of Michel Platini and
European football's governing body
Fifa president Sepp Blatter has accused Uefa of a
campaign of hatred following his re-election on
Friday.
After a week which has seen Fifa embroiled in
turmoil following the arrests of a number of
officials, the Swiss was elected into a fifth term of
office at the head of the game's governing body
after seeing off the challenge of Prince Ali bin al-
Hussein.
Uefa president Michel Platini said earlier this week
that he had asked Blatter to step down from his
role following the scandal which has seen several
officials indicted on corruption charges, with a
potential boycott of World Cups 2018 and 2022 by
European nations being mooted.
Blatter, however, has branded Uefa's rhetoric as
little more than hate-mongering and issued an
ominous warning to Platini.
"It's hatred, coming not only from one person at
Uefa but the organisation of Uefa, who were not
involved in 1998 when I became president," he
said, speaking to Swiss television's RTS.
"I forgive everyone, but I do not forget."

Manchester United table €35M for Benzema

Manchester United have reportedly opened
the bidding for Karim Benzema by making a
£35.6million offer.
United were linked to Real Madrid striker
Benzema this week by the Guardian, who
say Louis van Gaal is keen on a deal to
bring him to Old Trafford.
And reports in Spain quote that story and
now say a bid has been made, thought to
be worth £35.6m.
Arsenal have also been linked with
Benzema but United are seen as the front
runners to do business.
The Red Devils have significant cash to
spend and could offer a huge salary to get
the deal done.

Women world cup, England loose to Canada

England were defeated 1-0 by host nation Canada
in their final warm-up game before the World Cup.
Sophie Schmidt scored with a brilliant first-time
strike from the edge of the box in the 23rd minute.
In a game of few clear openings, Mark Sampson's
England were second best for long periods but
Fara Williams struck the crossbar from distance
late on.
England begin their World Cup campaign with a
match against the highly-rated France side in
Moncton on 9 June.
And they will need to show a considerable
improvement on their performance in Hamilton,
Ontario, if they are to make a serious impression
at the World Cup.
They perhaps enjoyed the better of a scrappy start
to the match on the artificial surface at Tim
Hortons Field and went close through a free-kick
from returning captain Steph Houghton.
Canada - coached by Englishman John Herdman -
appeared tentative and uncertain before Schmidt
settled any nerves with her brilliant strike.
She connected with Josee Belanger's low pass and
thrashed the ball beyond Karen Bardsley with her
sensational first-time strike.
Canada, defeated by England in the Cyprus Cup
final in March, took charge for the remainder of the
opening half, with the impressive Schmidt going
close with a free-kick and again with a shot that
Bardsley kept out after the restart.
Sampson, who had named a first XI featuring
several players uncertain to start against France,
made a triple substitution on 60 minutes but it had
little impact as Canada continued to play the more
impressive football.
However, England almost levelled against the run
of play after 87 minutes when substitute Williams
struck the crossbar with a long-range effort that
completely caught out keeper McLeod.
England starting XI: Bardsley, Bronze, Houghton
(c), Stoney, Rafferty, Duggan, J Scott, Chapman,
Carney, White, Sanderson.
