Liverpool on the brink of capturing Clyne

The 24-year-old had been eager to join
Manchester United but it is their bitter rivals who
have won the race to sign the England
international
Liverpool are set to make Nathaniel Clyne their
sixth summer signing after agreeing a €17.5
million fee with Southampton , Goal can confirm.
Clyne's future at St Mary's Stadium was the
subject of intense speculation throughout last
season and Goal revealed in April that he had told
Manchester United he would be eager to move to
Old Trafford this summer.
But it is United's bitter rivals Liverpool who have
won the race for Clyne - who has one year
remaining on his Southampton contract - with a
deal starting at €14.7m, just days after confirming
the €40m capture of Hoffenheim star Roberto
Firmino.
Clyne will become Brendan Rodgers' sixth
acquisition of a busy start to the summer transfer
window, joining Firmino, James Milner, Danny
Ings, Adam Bogdan and youngster Joe Gomez at
Anfield.
Earlier this month Southampton signed Portugal
international right-back Cedric as a replacement
for the outgoing Clyne, while Glen Johnson is set
to leave Liverpool on a free transfer when his
contract expires at the end of June.
