BREAKING NEWS : Blatter resigns as Fifa president

Sepp Blatter announced his intention to
resign as president of football’s governing
body Fifa on Tuesday afternoon.
The 79-year-old was elected for his fifth
term last Friday, but announced his shock
decision at a hastily organised press
conference that had barely 15 people
present.
Fifa will now name their new president at a
congress ‘as soon as possible’, with the
organisation finding itself in the midst of a
corruption scandal that saw a number of
senior officials arrested on charges of
racketeering, money laundering and wire
fraud.
Blatter said: ‘I decided to stand again for
election for the good of football, but my
mandate does not appear to be supported
by everybody.
‘The elections are closed but the challenges
we are facing have not. FIFA needs
profound restructuring.
‘I will call an extraordinary congress to elect
a new president. I will not stand. I am now
free of the constraints of the election.
‘I am very much linked to Fifa and its
interests. Those interests are dear to me
and this is why I am taking this decision.

Domenico Scala, chairman of Fifa’s audit
and compliance committee, confirmed that
the unprecedented congress would likely
take place between December and March
2016, and refused to rule out wholesale
changes to the organisation’s structure.
‘We want to fundamentally reform the way in
which people see Fifa,’ he said.
‘While it would be premature to speculate
on the outcomes of this work, nothing will
be off the table, including the structure and
composition of the Executive Committee and
the way in which members of the Executive
Committee are elected.
‘These steps will ensure that the
organisation cannot be used by those
seeking to enrich themselves at the
expense of the game.’
